Lekin = 'But'

This artwork features a rich interplay of geometric and floral motifs as its foundational layer, drawing inspiration from traditional Islamic design. The composition is meticulously symmetrical, with interwoven patterns of stylised leaves and petals radiating from a central point. The use of green, gold, cream, and subtle turquoise hues against a dark background lends the piece both vibrancy and depth.

Description

Upon closer observation, one begins to notice that the floral elements are not merely decorative — they subtly incorporate abstract letterforms. These shapes appear to be drawn from Arabic or Urdu script, seamlessly integrated into the geometric structure. Loops, curves, and strokes resembling characters such as Laam, Kaaf, or Noon are artfully disguised within the design.

These letters are not immediately legible, suggesting a deliberate abstraction. It is possible that they spell out a word — perhaps ‘Lekin’ (meaning ‘but’ in both Arabic and Urdu) — repeated and mirrored throughout the composition. The abstraction transforms the script into a visual rhythm, where text becomes texture, and meaning is embedded within ornamentation.

The result is a harmonious blend of language and pattern, where the boundary between calligraphy and decoration is gracefully blurred. It invites the viewer to engage not only with the aesthetic beauty of the piece, but also with its hidden linguistic dimension.
