January 26, 2025Cursive
Cursive plays with the idea of language as something both fluid and fragile. The thick, cracked acrylic surfaces symbolize a loss of permanence, questioning whether writing, once a powerful tool of communication and culture can withstand the forces of time, destruction, and reinterpretation. This work is not just about calligraphy, it is about memory and the resilience of cultural identity in the face of change.

Description |
The calligraphic forms, though partially obscured, still retain their dynamic energy, flowing across the canvas in sweeping gestures. The black strokes, remnants of Arabic letterforms, interact with the raw, weathered textures, reinforcing a sense of disruption and transformation. The overlay of white paint, applied with a rough and expressive hand, acts both as a veil, partially concealing the script beneath it. This suggests themes of censorship, forgotten histories, or the impermanence of language and identity. Beneath the layers of white, hints of earthy oranges, greens, and blacks peek through, adding depth and complexity. These colours evoke a sense of heritage, tradition, and natural decay, while their geometric undertones reference the structured precision of Islamic art and architecture. Instead of rigid symmetry, this piece embraces chaos and fragmentation, positioning Arabic calligraphy within a contemporary, almost post apocalyptic landscape. |
